In order for your deck stair railing to be functional and safe to be used, it needs to be installed correctly. We at Art Metal can help you with your deck stair railing installation and ensure you that it will stay strong and durable. You can browse our gallery to see a deck stair railing design that you like, or you can also create your own design. We will try our best to implement what you have created as long as it meets the requirements set by the deck stair railing code.
The following are the requirements for stairs, as determined by the Canadian government:
Handrails – should have a height between 34” and 38”, and the handrail’s diameter needs to be from 1 ¼” to 2 ¼”.
Baluster spacing – We at Art Metal follow the railing code, and all of our designs do not have spaces over 4”. There could be an exception, which is the space between the stair thread, riser, and the toe railing’s bottom part (may measure 6” wide).
Support posts – posts in the deck’s surface should not be more than 6ft apart, while those on the staircases shouldn’t be more than 5 ½ ft apart.
All stairs that have more than one step and are higher than 30” from the surface need guard railings. They can be made from any solid material, from composite and to wrought iron. You can use any design idea that comes to your mind as long as the deck stair railing code requirements are met.
The Canadian government regulates the stair railing code, as stairs with no railings or poor quality railings are a potential hazard. The requirements are the following:
Their height should be between 34”and 38” (measurements from the nose of the stairs). The handrail has to be from 1 ¼’’ to 2 ¼” in diameter. Larger handrails are allowable if they have a structure with a finger recess.
All our designs at Art Metal Workshop have spaces no more than 4”, which is according to the railing code. The exception is the space between the stair thread, riser, and the bottom part of the toe railing, which may be 6” width.
It’s important that the posts aren’t farther from one another than 6 ft on the surface of the deck and 5 ½ ft on the staircase.
The height requirements change from area to area, so if you live in Toronto or any other city of Ontario, mind the new code.

Make sure to include the measurements in your deck stair railing plans. Aside from these, you also have to include the length, place to apply, main material, installation method, color, etc.
They’re important pieces of hardware that attach rails to posts. Without them the railing system won’t be functional and will be too fragile. There are aluminum and synthetic stair rail brackets, and they are also of different sizes, so make sure to choose proper ones.
The stair railing system is what ensures your safety on the stairs of your deck. It’s important to follow the regulations and know their modifications in Toronto. We at Art Metal Workshop are always ready to help you with the installation of your railings according to the requirements.
