Are you a gardener? Or maybe you want to decorate your yard with authentic decorative flower beds? Or perhaps you need to transform the grounds of your country house/cafe/recreation center? Choose corten steel planters and enjoy great-looking plants in stylish stands!
Planting boxes that can be assembled into almost any shape are called custom steel planters. They are placed in yards, terraces, flowerbeds, near buildings, swimming pools, etc. They are highly resistant to corrosion and external damage.
When choosing plant containers, you are not limited to standard sizes or shapes. Thanks to the modern technology of forging, casting, and metal processing, gardeners have many options for large or modern planters.
The effects of the external environment on steel have negative consequences. You have probably seen rusted steel planters peppered with holes. This is nothing but aggressive rust that corrodes metal structures and products. Two common ways to deal with this phenomenon are to paint and manufacture resistant steel.
Exterior handling of black metal planters is fraught with common problems:
1. Paint and primer lose their properties over time.
2. Products are prone to mechanical abuse.
3. Maintenance of such stainless steel planters is very costly.
For better durability and preservation of the presentable appearance of metal planters, it is recommended to use special alloys called “corten steel.”
Fabrication of corten steel products is a complex process that gives steel planters special properties. We won’t go into details, just remember that after some procedures, the metal acquires an exciting feature: it quickly forms an oxide film on the surface, which prevents the spread of corrosion within the product or structure.
Typically, such material is used in constructing bridges, buildings, and structures under the constant influence of the atmosphere and natural phenomena.
There are 5 common types of corrosion-resistant steel:
ASTM A847;
A588;
A242;
A606;
COR-TEN.
The latter type is the property of the only manufacturer in the world; therefore, all suppliers usually use the other grades of weather-resistant steel.
Contrary to popular belief, corten products do rust, but the process takes much longer than with simple materials. But there are exceptional situations. For example, when a small area is constantly exposed to water: in the corner, on a flat surface, etc. The only reliable way out is to create drains to divert liquid from the most likely water accumulation areas.
But despite this nuance, corten is the best material for creating tall, round planters or boxes.
In addition to the classic shapes: round, square, rectangular, and oval, there are many others. Unlike galvanized steel planters, corten products can be made to order using sketches, models, drawings, or other types of visualization of the desired product.
It is recommended to make garden plant containers exactly from corten, adapting their shapes to the overall design. Want a triangular box with a diagonal cut? No problem! Another feature of steel is its adaptability and malleability to processing.
Do you want to give your country house a “rustic” look? Or maybe you need durable containers for growing flowers, trees, or plants? Order corten products, and we’ll supply them right to your site!

How long does a Corten steel planter last?
The minimum guaranteed service life of the product is 10 years. If you follow recommendations for the maintenance and upkeep of corten steel crates, you can achieve an impressive service life of over 100 years.
Is Corten steel good for plants?
Yes, because it has better heat dissipation and insulation properties, retains moisture longer in the ground, and does not corrode as much, extending the life of the box for many years.
How long does it take for corten steel to rust?
Under standard conditions, moderate rainfall, and humidity, the process takes about 6 months. This period may be longer or shorter, depending on climate conditions. You can speed up or slow down the patina or rusting process, but it’s better to let it go on its own.
Will a steel planter rust?
Yes, because a plant box is almost always wet from the inside – the rate of oxide film formation is much higher than when using the product to store dry materials. Welds are especially prone to corrosion if special elements are not used to enhance the welds’ anti-corrosion properties.
Is stainless steel good for planters?
Thanks to its amazing characteristics and features, stainless steel is one of the best materials for growing plants outdoors. Such products can last more than 20 years and do not lose their marketable appearance.
