20221208_095916

A deck handrail is an essential element for the safety of the construction. It can be installed on the stairs of a deck, the deck itself, a balcony, etc. It also has to be comfortable to grasp or lean on, which reflects on the requirements for the construction. Deck handrails have to be as long as the railing and the deck is to ensure safety in any spot of the elevated platform.

Building a Deck Handrail and Railings

  • Adjust the toe and the top railings length to fit them between the posts.
  • Cut the balusters so the top edge is square and the bottom is pointy at 45°.
  • Mark on the railings where the balusters will be put.
  • Attach the balusters to the bottom rail using deck screws so the angle is even with the railing.
  • Put the balusters’ square edges on or through the top rail.
  • Attach the top railing to the posts.
  • Squeeze the bottom rail between the posts.
  • Put on rail caps, handrail decoration, and other additional elements.
  • If needed, put an additional block in the center of the bottom rail for more support.

Types of Deck Handrail

  • Metal handrails.

Metal handrails for decks and balconies are considered the strongest of all options. Also, you can choose from many types of metal for your project, as we at Art Metal Workshop can offer you aluminum, steel, and wrought iron railings for decks.

  • Wooden handrails.

A deck handrail made from wood treated with pressure is strong, flexible in designs and colors, but needs certain care. You can choose one of many types of woods, depending on your personal preference and the style of your deck.

  • Glass handrails.

To make glass handrails for the balcony or deck our specialists use special toughened glass to be sure the construction is strong enough to keep a certain amount of pressure. There are framed and frame less glass handrails, and both options require no maintenance.

  • Cable handrails.

Cable railings consist of a metal or wooden frame and mostly horizontal cables instead of balusters. This option is quite new yet popular for high-tech or minimalistic houses.

Choosing the Right Material

Whatever variant you choose, your deck handrail has to be well-built and safely installed.
