The Right Handrail Height and Installation Guide
The main thing you have to remember while planning a railing construction is handrail height. For Toronto it’s determined according to the Ontario height code as the safest for an average human. This will not influence the design you choose as long as you don’t go over the numbers.
Handrail Height and Availability Code Ontario
- If the width of the step is more than 1,100 mm (43”), there should be handrails from both sides.
- If the width of the flight exceeds 2,200 mm, at least one intermediate railing has to be installed. The reason is that the width between two stair handrails shouldn’t exceed 1,650 mm.
- Handrail height has to be a minimum of 865 mm and a maximum of 965 mm (between 33” and 38”) from the surface of the flight. The height can be alternated if an additional handrail is needed.
- The deck or stair handrail cap needs to be convenient to grasp with a perimeter for at least 100 mm, but not more than 155 mm.
Stair Railing and Handrail Installation Instructions
- Measure the stairs if you have already built them and determine the length of the handrail needed.
- If you install a basement handrail mounted to a wall, mark the height of the railing on the wall. If not, just measure the height and put the number to the plan.
- Cut the railings according to the needed length and fit the joints if any. Glue the joints and cut the spindles (balusters) according to the needed height.
- If the handrail is wall-mounted, set the brackets and install the railing. If not, install the toe rail first, then install the iron spindles or balusters of any other material (vinyl, glass, wood).Finally, install the handrail brackets and the top rail.
- Fit the handrail cap to the top railing if necessary.
