In Burlington, an approved pool fence is required before you fill your pool with water. At Art Metal Workshop, we design custom glass pool fencing around the City’s Pool Fencing By-law from the very first sketch, creating a compliant safety barrier that complements your space.
Whether you’re fencing a backyard pool or a shared building pool, clear visibility and safety matter. Our pool fencing uses safety-rated tempered or laminated glass, with panels sized to meet Ontario Building Code requirements.
We use corrosion-resistant hardware, measure each installation to fit your yard, and assemble every glass pool fence in our own workshop.
Burlington’s Pool Fencing By-law sets the minimum for any enclosure around a private pool. Chain-link and solid-panel fencing must be at least 1.2 m high, while wrought iron or other metal fencing must be at least 1.5 m, with all options capped at 2.0 m. The fence must sit at least 1.2 m from the pool’s edge, and the gap between the bottom of the fence and the ground can’t exceed 100 mm. Gates need substantial hinges and a self-closing, self-latching mechanism mounted on the inside top; a thumb-latch doesn’t meet that requirement. The City requires a permit before you can build a pool, and you can’t fill it with water until the fence and gates are in place and approved. If someone fills a pool without a permit, the City can have it drained at the owner’s expense.
We’ve installed pool glass fences in Aldershot, Tyandaga, Brant Hills, Headon Forest, Millcroft, and Shoreacres, among other Burlington neighbourhoods. For related work in the same areas, pool fences in Burlington and privacy glass railings in Burlington each have a dedicated page.
The City of Burlington doesn’t publish a set turnaround time for pool fence permits, and wait times can run long, so apply as early as possible and confirm current timelines directly with the City.
The City can order the pool drained at your expense if you fill it without an approved fence and gates in place, and it is also an offence under the by-law.
Yes. Burlington’s permit fee schedule charges differently depending on the pool: one fee for an above-ground pool, a higher one for an in-ground or on-ground pool, and a lower one for a temporary pool.
It depends on the material. Chain-link and solid-panel fencing need at least 1.2 m, wrought iron or other metal fencing needs at least 1.5 m, and every option is capped at 2.0 m.
The glass you choose, the design, the job size, site conditions, and the finish all affect the final price. We put a number to your specific project once we’ve seen your space.
