Stair Railing Installation According to Height and Dimension Code

20221020_130736

Art Metal specializes in stair railing installation according to the height and dimension code. It’s important that you work with a licensed contractor when it comes to your railings, hand rails and guard rails.

A wrong choice could set you back in terms of penalties and outright rejection of your construction permit application. This is why you don’t just select any welder off the street because there’s another dynamic when it comes to the stair railing installation according to height and dimension code.

If the job will be outsourced to a third-party, verify from your housing contractor whether or not the metalworks will be done by a certified specialist. Better yet, have your contractor contact us to design, fabricate, and install the rails in your property. We work closely with the contractor to be consistent with the timeline of delivery and prevent any delay in the whole project.

For instance, handrails and guard rails have a corresponding height in relation to the stairs and platforms. The building code is very specific on this, down to the last millimeter. The distance between each railing needs also to be very accurate. One reason for this is to ensure the safety of the small children and pets in the house or commercial area.

For stair railing installation according to height and dimension code, get Art Metal on your speed dial. This makes the whole process easier because you can cross this problem off your list. You can rest assured that when we are finished with the job, your housing or commercial construction permit will pass with flying colors.

How Much Does it Cost to Install Indoor Stair Railings in Toronto?

Installing an interior railing in Greater Toronto Area typically costs from $60 to $550 per linear foot, and starts from $150 per foot in Art Metal. The final price may vary depending on factors such as size, design complexity, materials used, and the specific contractor you choose. We recommend you consult with local interior railing specialists in Toronto to get a more accurate estimate based on your specific project requirements.

Step-By-Step Stair Railing Installation and Code Requirements

Stair railing installation determines the safety of the staircase, as well as its balance with the design of the house at all. To install this part right, you will need certain tools, calculators, and the knowledge of code requirements, which is the most important. No matter whether it’s exterior or interior stair railings, you need to follow the code to build the safest staircase for you and your family.

Stair Railing Installation: A Brief Guide

  • Prior to the actual stair railing installation, put the newel posts that will hold the rail. Fit it to the top and bottom steps and secure their position using lag bolts.
  • Cut the railing so it fits the necessary length, remembering the additions to the main length between the posts. Our Art Metal Workshop technicians also recommend you to include angle cut measurements so everything fits right.
  • Install the balusters (or spindles) minding the spacing between them according to the Ontario code. Make sure you predrill the holes where the spindles will be installed, remembering the design of the elements.
  • Install the railing.
You need to put fasteners on the posts before stair railing installation, setting the rail so it fits the fastener. Then insert the endings of the balusters to the holes on the railing and tighten up the fasteners.

Ontario Stair Railing Code Highlights

The following regulations are met by our Art Metal technicians while installing exterior and interior metal stair railings and all other types of stair rails. They include height, spindle spacing, and many other dimensions’ requirements.

  • Handrails must be conveniently graspable, which usually includes circular sections with 30-50 mm diameter or non-circular sections with 100-155 mm perimeter.
  • Stair railing height must be within 865-965 mm range from the stair nosing. This requirement can be neglected only in case of any additional handrails (for children, for example).
  • At least one of the handrails on the flight needs to be longer than the edges of the staircase for at least 300 mm.
  • There must be a 40 mm or larger clearance between the handrail and the wall its connected to.
  • The spindle spacing must be not more than 4’’ to increase safety.
